Earthquake of 5.3 magnitude strikes Turkey
The Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) confirmed on Thursday that a 5.3 magnitude earthquake rattled the Malatya province in eastern Turkey, TRT Arabic reported.
Turkey’s Minister of Interior, Ali Yerlikaya, shared on X that the ministry’s initial determinations shows that one rundown building was knocked down, heavily damaging two neighbouring buildings.
He said no deaths had been reported so far, but 22 people sustained minor injuries.
Residents of the surrounding provinces felt the earthquake, which was recorded at a depth of 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) below the ground, according to TRT Arabic.
The governor of Malatya, Arif Yilmaz, told Anadolu Agency, the state-run news agency, that their disaster and emergency management teams continue to conduct field surveys in the province.
Yilmaz added that preliminary information confirms the collapse of an abandoned building.
A child sustained fractures in his leg while crossing the street during the earthquake, the governor added.
He noted that several people were also taken to hospital after suffering injured for jumping from balconies.
