Rioters throw stones at vehicles and police in Amsterdam, three arrests made

Riots broke out in Amsterdam Nieuw-West on Monday evening when a group of dozens of people threw heavy fireworks and pelted cars.

A tram caught fire after fireworks were thrown into it. There was no one in the tram when the fire broke out. The fire was quickly extinguished. A bus was also pelted with stones and the rioters also threw stones at the police.

The riot police were deployed. According to the police, the worst of the unrest was over by the end of the evening.

It is unclear what caused the riots. The police arrested three people and do not rule out that more arrests will follow. On videos of the incidents, rioters reportedly shouted “free Palestine”.

An emergency ordinance is in effect in Amsterdam until Thursday morning due to the violence in the city after the match between Ajax and Maccabi Tel Aviv last Thursday night.
