Typhoon Shanshan continued to pound Japan with heavy rain on Saturday (August 31), triggering landslides and prompting weather officials to issue warnings for flooding hundreds of miles from the storm’s centre, Reuters reports.

 

At least six people have been killed and 125 injured in storm-related incidents such as mudslides in recent days, according to public broadcaster NHK.

 

Airlines including All Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines announced cancellations of dozens of flights on Saturday, according to NHK. Rail services including the bullet train operation between Mishima in Shizuoka Prefecture and the central city of Nagoya were suspended on Saturday morning.

 

Typhoon Shanshan is the latest harsh weather system to hit Japan, following Typhoon Ampil, which also led to blackouts and evacuations, earlier this month.
