Before beginning of crisis, EU and USA appealed to Moscow to hold meeting on Nagorno-Karabakh issue: Zakharova

The EU and the US have appealed to Moscow to hold a meeting on the subject of Nagorno-Karabakh before the crisis begins. Maria Zakharova, official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, announced this during the briefing.

Commenting on the meeting of the parties in Istanbul, which was described as ‘secret’ in the media, Maria Zakharova told journalists that the initiative to hold it came from the West. There was nothing secret, and if this story is presented now as provocative, then the purpose was to create provocation.

“I don’t know about the secret negotiations between the USA, the EU and the Russian Federation on the Karabakh issue. The USA and the EU approached us with a request to organize a meeting, I would even say contacts, and during the meeting, their goal was mentioned. The parties exchanged opinions on the situation. That’s it,” said the diplomat, answering TASS’s question at the briefing.

Earlier, Politico wrote that high-ranking US and EU officials urgently met with their Russian counterparts to hold secret talks in Turkey to resolve the conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh. The newspaper claims that the parties wanted to put pressure on Baku to ensure the entry of humanitarian aid trucks from Armenia to Nagorno-Karabakh.
