The authorities reiterated that Georgia will not join the sanctions against Russia
Georgian Dream Chairman Irakli Kobakhidze said that Tbilisi does not intend to join the sanctions against Russia, despite the numerous campaigns carried out by opponents of the authorities.
With these words, Kobakhidze began and ended his speech from the headquarters of the ruling party.
“Introducing economic sanctions, the Georgian government will not be able to harm Russia, but will inflict the hardest on its own country and population. Therefore, our position on the imposition of sanctions is unchanged, no one can change this position, neither through provocations, nor with the help of secret campaigns or foreign lobbyists. Georgia will not join the sanctions imposed against Russia,” Kobakhidze said at a briefing.
The politician reiterated the idea of the authorities that the provocations were organized by the United National Movement and added: after the 2008 war, no country in the world imposed restrictions due to Russian aggression in Georgia, after which the country’s territories were occupied and hundreds of military and civilians died residents. The Chairman of the “Dream” stressed that Georgia itself did not impose sanctions, which already in 2012 removed the visa regime for Russian citizens.
The latest opinion poll by CRRC Georgia, published on March 15, shows that the vast majority of the country’s residents want Tbilisi to join Western sanctions against Russia.
The majority of respondents agreed with the opinion that Georgia should join the sanctions against Russia (66%). Opinions were divided on whether Georgia should participate in all sanctions (39%) or some of them (27%). Only 19% said that Georgia should not join the sanctions at all.
