Issue of providing security guarantees to Ukraine discussed
The US talks with Ukraine, NATO, and European partners in Brussels on security guarantees for Kyiv were productive and substantive, according to US President’s Special Envoy Jared Kushner on Twitter (X).
“We are working intensively with all parties to find practical solutions that can bring this war to an end and establish the foundations for lasting peace. Our objective is to address the security concerns of all sides through practical, mutually agreed arrangements that reduce the risk of future conflict,” Kushner noted.
He confirmed that the first trilateral peace talks between Ukraine, the US, and Russia since February would take place in Abu Dhabi next week.
According to US President Donald Trump’s special envoy, the US is working with both sides to develop serious proposals that can make the negotiations more meaningful and productive.
“President Trump has made achieving peace a priority. Our focus is on doing the difficult, detailed work necessary to turn that objective into a comprehensive and durable agreement,” Kushner added.
He said that five main objectives were being considered: ongoing security consultations, reliable crisis communication channels, greater military transparency, mutual measures to reduce the risk of escalation, and a permanent framework for long-term European security and stability.
According to Trump’s special envoy, any agreements must fully respect the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independent decision-making of every nation.
“Each country will retain authority over its own security and alliances, and no country would have a veto over another’s sovereign choices. NATO will remain central to European collective defense, and this initiative would build upon existing institutions and commitments,” Kushner noted.
He said Trump had held a substantive discussion with a number of European leaders on establishing the conditions for lasting peace, following more than 30 years of efforts by Europe and Russia to build a sustainable security framework.
Kushner noted that Washington would continue consultations in the Shell Bay format, involving Ukraine, NATO, the European Union, and European partners, while also engaging the Russian side as part of the peace process.
“All parties remain intensely engaged in preparing for substantive and productive negotiations. We will consult closely with our European partners on the sidelines and, if progress is made, aim to move toward a broader multilateral format with their direct participation,” he concluded.
