China, Arab League call for comprehensive ceasefire between Israel, Hamas

China and the League of Arab States have reached consensus on solving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict during a meeting between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul-Gheit in Cairo, Egypt on Sunday, Reuters reports.

 

Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, held talks with Ahmed Aboul-Gheit during his visit to Egypt.

 

The two sides had an in-depth exchange of views on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and reached consensus on addressing the conflict.

 

Firstly, an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire should be achieved, and the relevant resolutions adopted by the UN Security Council and the UN General Assembly on the situation in the Gaza and the Palestinian-Israeli conflict should be fully and effectively implemented.

 

Secondly, the international community should take active actions to de-escalate the tensions and push for a ceasefire as soon as possible.

 

Thirdly, any arrangement concerning the future and destiny of Palestine should follow the principle of “the Palestinians governing Palestine.”

 

Fourthly, the two sides stressed that the two-state solution has always been the foundation for any future arrangement concerning the fate of the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem.

 

Fifthly, the two sides emphasized that practical and effective efforts should be made to achieve a comprehensive, just and lasting settlement of the Palestinian question.

 

Sixthly, the two sides expressed grave concern over the rising tensions in the Red Sea, stressing that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Yemen should be respected, while the security of international trade routes in the Red Sea should be guaranteed.

 

Seventhly, the two sides called for the convening of an international peace conference with broad participation as soon as possible.

 

Eighthly, China appreciated the important role played by the Arab side in cooling down the regional situation and avoiding a comprehensive humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. The Arab side highly appreciated China’s tremendous efforts in defusing the conflict in Gaza, realizing a ceasefire and supporting the just cause of the Palestinian people.
